Macclesfield, UK is not the first place you would think of when presented with an album's worth of sublime deep house. Crap football team, yes, but house music?! Marcus Turcotte AKA Sirus was indeed born in Macclesfield, but swiftly moved ship with his family to Toronto in Canada where he studied piano and guitar.
Although classically trained, Sirus became interested in the technological revolution of sampling and programming and, together with fellow Ontarion Hayden Andre Brown, formed Subculture and recorded the classic early house tracks "The Voyage", "Come Back" and "Dreams" for the legendary Strobe label.
By the mid-nineties, Subculture had gone their different ways, and Sirus met another budding Canadian producer in Nick Holder of DNH Records. He released several EPs on DNH including "Sax Appeal" and "Echoes & Vibes".
After a brief stint as a vocalist in a trad Canadian roots band (Sirus provides vocals on "Thunder" and "Trapped"), Sirus teamed up again with Nick Holder for various tracks and also to launch his own Escape Records label.
The debut album, "On The Edge Of A Dream" from Sirus is a pleasure to listen to, both for the DJ and the collector alike, and its hard driving club tracks, dreamy strings and cool lounge grooves shows Sirus' broad musical tastes while highlighting his musicianship. The album includes the benchmark track 'An Eye For An Eye' which has become an anthemic track for Danny Tenaglia at his Vinyl club nights in New York.
